It is my wish that through these letters you may have a deeper understanding of the ideas and processes I apply every day in my hearings. I also wish that by reading these stories, you may also find the courage to become a conciliator.

The letter format is not a new one, and I have always cherished the idea of writing letters, even from the age in which letters carried that fresh stamp smell. My first savings were spent in mailing several letters. Many of the books in the Bible were written as letters, which we can read today, two thousand years later, as if they were written to us.

It is my longing that you feel challenged and encouraged to conciliate the use of new and creative solutions with using known and proven methods for this profession.

By mediating conflicts, I hope you will develop your own methods to do it.

Each mediator must develop their own perspective on conflict and how to solve it.

But maybe these letters will help expand your knowledge of how to do so.

In this book you will find many stories mine and the others. I will try my best to stay true to the events that I have lived, though most likely many of those stories will reflect the memories that came to mind as I wrote them down.

As Gabriel García Márquez sayid: “life is not what happened, but what we remember and how we remember it”.

More important than being true to the stories, I hope to be true to my convictions. The stories in my letters have changed numerous times as I have read over and over again, but let me tell you that in between the lines of these stories, I will always leave a biblical principle or truth that drives my actions as a conciliator.

Paraphrasing Jorge Luis Borges, I will say that my telling of the story will be true to the reality of the events, or in any case my personal memory of the events, which is the same.

So, my reader, don’t fret over the details of the stories I tell, but rather look for the truths that sustain those stories. Another advise on how to read this book is that you be permeable, a word used frequently by Dr. Amado Yunes, (1954–2000) my father. When you read these letters, you will find ways to deal with conflict, some which you will like and other which you won’t. Keep on reading and persevere, without throwing the towel, because I wrote each letter thinking of you.
